BACKGROUND: Following City Council direction, the Environmental Quality and Sustainability Commission (EQSC) created the Urban Heat Island/Tree and Shade Subcommittee.  The purpose of the subcommittee is to evaluate, analyze and recommend policies to address the issues surrounding Urban Heat and to advance implementation of the Phoenix Tree and Shade Master Plan.

Phoenix City Council on March 22, 2017 approved the EQC's name change to better reflect its work. The focus of the Environmental Quality and Sustainability Commission (EQSC) has expanded to embrace the social, ecologic and economic objectives of sustainability to improve quality of life for current and future generations.

The EQSC identifies and advises the Phoenix City Council on environmental quality and sustainability issues affecting the city and recommends to the City Council policies, positions, roles, and action the city might take to address those issues in a manner that protects, promotes, restores, or enchances the city's natural and built environments.

EQSC also announced the release of the city's most recent sustainability report.  The 2015-16 sustainability report highlights the accomplishments achieved thus far by the city and the 2050 Environmental Sustainability goals, which reflect the community's desired outcomes for a socially, economically and environmentally resilient city.
